Sammi Sue (1/01 to 11/01)Sammi Sue was an almost 1 yr. old red female who was turned in by her owner. She was a sweet, loving girl who loved to play with the other bloodhounds. She went to her new forever home in October 2001. She was adjusting well but began displaying episodes of extreme aggression. Her new home worked extensively with her and she was medically checked as well. The unfortunate veterinary diagnosis was Sudden Rage Syndrome. Sammi Sue was lovingly held by her new Mom as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge in November 2001. |

Baloo (11/97 to 11/01)Baloo was a lovely 4 yr. old black/tan male who was turned in by a shelter. This loving boy's owner died suddenly and he was separated from his pit bull brother and turned in to the shelter. Our foster home quickly picked him up and Baloo stole their hearts just as quickly. Once his little "humping" problem was brought under control, Baloo had fun romping with the foster home's other bloodhounds and basset hounds. Unfortunately, they discovered that Baloo had a great dislike of children. Due to the risk of harm that may have befallen an unsuspecting child, MBR made the painful decision to help Baloo painlessly cross the Rainbow Bridge in November 2001. |

Hannah (9/99 to 11/01)Hannah was a 3 yr. old
black/tan female who was turned in by her owner. MBR Director Sandi Singer-Adams
fostered Hannah at her house. Hannah brought out every emotion we had. We
cried when we saw how timid, scared, underweight and abused she had been.
We laughed with joy the first time she played with the other dogs. Our hearts
swelled with pride for her achievements when she stopped being quite so timid
and would eagerly run to you for loving pets. We worried when she started
erratically attacking the other dogs. We worried even more when it started
increasing. Finally, we cried when we made the decision to euthanize her.
Sandi held our little "Hannah Banana" in her arms as she crossed
the Rainbow Bridge in November 2001. |

Duke (10/00 to 1/02)Duke was a 2 yr. old black/tan male who was picked up from a shelter. Duke was the first "foster" dog Sandi had at her home. He spent 3 days here with us before we transported him to a more long-term foster home. She noticed that Duke was afraid of a lot of things but he always behaved like a perfect gentleman at our home. After being in his new foster home for awhile, he reacted badly to a flashlight being turned on and fear-bit his foster mom. Fear bites cannot be "trained" out of dogs because you don't know what they will react in that manner to until it is too late. Duke crossed the Rainbow Bridge in March 2001. |

Jasmine's Babies (8/02 to 8/02) In August 02, a pregnant female was turned into MBR. At nearly full term, Jasmine weighed only 70 pounds. She was flea/tick ridden and so unhealthy - beyond words. In less than 12 hours of being at her foster home, a litter of 12 puppies were born. Eight of these pups were stillborn, and 4 survived the birth. Baby #1 died soon after birth and these three Shining Stars made it only a few short days, even with the heroic efforts of 2 MBR Directors and 2 area veterinarians. |

| Burt (3/96 to 8/02)
At about 7 1/2 years old, Burt came to MBR. Discovered as a stray, it was obvious Burt had lived a rough life. Burt had many health issues yet he was a gentle, loving old man who loved treats, loved to sleep, but most of all Burt loved to be petted. Burt was just "happy to be here" ... a little cranky sometimes, but eager to please if you had a treat. Burt is one of those that will remain in our hearts forever. Burt even enjoyed making an appearance on Chicago's WGN Morning News. Burt's health issues got the best of him and Burt crossed the Rainbow Bridge in August 2002. He was laid to rest under his favorite tree. Bye old buddy... say hi to everyone. |

Duke V (9/01 to 11/02) Duke was a beautiful 1 yr. old male bloodhound who had to be euthanized in November 2002. Duke was a loving, very well behaved young man 98% of the time. He was also an expert thief. During the other 2% of the time, if he had one of his stolen goods nearby, he was very dangerous. Duke is an excellent example of why people need to research breeders, meet the parents, review a dog's pedigree, etc. |

Bubba (12/95 to 12/02) My beautiful boy, Bubba,
was unexpectedly laid to rest this afternoon. Bubba came to us as a foster
last year and immediately became part of the family (he knew it before we
admitted it). He was my travelling companion and 1/2 of the "snoring
in stereo" duo (John being the other 1/2). Bubba was raised with love
by his original home but they never properly socialized him, which in turn
caused him to be overly protective of his family. This is why he was turned
in to MBR. He bonded so well with us, and so quickly, that he also tried to
protect us. Due to our failings as humans, we were unable to keep this protective
nature completely at bay. John & I made the extremely painful decision
to euthanize Bubba. Thanks to the ugly side of rescue, I have had to hold
many dogs while they are being euthanized but this is something entirely different.
It hurts a lot more. Both John & I were with him through it all and he
slipped away peacefully. God bless him, but I think my Mr. Tough Guy husband
used more Kleenex to wipe his eyes than I did. Right now I am just trying
to get the courage up to get into our bed without having to contort myself
around Bubba anymore. The silence of only 1 snorer may be too loud right now. Sandi Singer-Adams |

Georgia (6/99 to 2/03) Georgia had a very rough beginning. For her first 3 years of life, she had been in a family that had "played" with her WITH a shock collar. This poor girl was scared of everything - being inside, floors, stairs, the color white, and more. Upon coming into MBR, Georgia was adopted by the Polhemus family (right). This wonderful and loving family worked with Georgia's fear issues - exhausting every avenue or therapy to try to help Georgia overcome being afraid. MBR can only commend and applaud the efforts the Polhemus' made to try to help Georgia. Sadly, in early August 02, Georgia began to fear-bite. No one will ever really know if her brain was slowly just "short circuiting" or if she was just "melting down" from being frightened so much over the years. |

Jed III (3/97 to 3/03) Jed was peacefully laid to rest in March after a long battle with severe Acral Lick Dermatitis. His original family had battled the problem for a year before the financial drain and frustration led them to surrendering Jed to MBR. Jed was a wonderful, sweet, good-natured gentleman whose only fault was he would not leave his legs and paws alone. So, after 5 different vets and the failure of behavioral modification and countless prescription and homeopathic medicines, we made the painful decision to end his suffering and help him cross the final bridge. |

Oddball It's with a heavy heart that I am writing today about the passing of a good friend. Oddball came to us as an 8 1/2 year old starvation rescue. We promptly spoiled the skinny old guy with food and love. It's with tears that I remember how he enjoyed his walks, playing "apple keepaway," and time spent with us. He was so gentle to those he spent time with, even the nephews that are half his size. We will miss him. I can only hope that in our short time together we were able to show him that not all people are bad. Goodby Oddball, until we meet again. The Kraft Family of Illinois |

Cher (5/97 to 5/03) Cher was turned over to MBR due to her owner's illness. According to the information provided, Cher was appx. 3 weeks pregnant with her 5th or 6th litter. She was extremely underweight and having difficult breathing. Her heartworm test results were positive. An EKG and x-ray revealed a severely enlarged heart and the beginnings of congestive heart failure. She would not have survived a termination/spay, nor would she probably survive whelping the puppies (even if she had, the pups probably would not have survived), and then she most likely would not have survived the treatment for her heartworm infestation. MBR made the painful decision to help this lovely, sweet girl go to her final resting place. Her death provided one final gift - to Purdue University and their ongoing studies for the prevention and treatment of heartworm infestations. |

Bailey III (10/01 to 6/03) Bailey III, a not quite 2 year old male neutered bloodhound, was turned in to MBR due to aggression issues. One of our main foster homes met the original owner to pick Bailey III up. Bailey III promptly tried to bite him. Over the next several hours, after using different approach techniques by different people, there were several more bite attempts. Luckily, no one was harmed. In accordance with our mission statement, it was determined that Bailey III was overtly aggressive and a danger to the public and he was promptly euthanized. Why was this young dog so aggressive? Was it bad breeding? Maybe. However, what we did learn was that his owner tried to Schutzhund train Bailey. This is what happens when unskilled people try to train a dog to be something other than what it is meant to be. |

Blue II (10/01 to 6/03) It has taken me many months
to face writing this memorial to a wonderful dog who enriched our lives while
he was with us. Blue could only be described as exhuberent, he was larger
than life in size and personality. Blue loved human laps to ly on and soft
beds to sleep on. Soon after bringing him home we enlarged our fenced yard
to allow him the space he needed to run and he loved his evening jogs with
Mike. I didn't know how he would react when soon after he came home with us
we had a houseful of family for the holidays. We discovered that he loved
all the people, jumping on my brothers lap immediately and moving from bed
to bed depending on who was the last to get up in the morning. Then in May
2003 a terrible day came, a day that was just like any other, except that
I made a mistake that cost me the companionship of my Blue-boy. Just like
any other day, he went out with me to pick up the paper and I turned my back
on him to water a plant. When I turned back, he was gone, thinking that he
had wandered toward the barn I ran that way, and then I turned and saw him
lying by the side of the road. A terrible lesson that bloodhounds can never
be let off lead, no matter how confident you may feel that they will not follow
their instinct and follow a scent with abandon. He was a great dog and deserved
a longer life and a happier ending. We miss you, Blue. |

Mr. Finley before he was known as "Mr. Finley". Shortly before MBR

and Mr. Finley was turned in to MBR in March 2002. |

Luke II (7/00 to 7/03) Luke was a 3 yr. old male bloodhound who came to MBR after being found as a stray. Initially he did very well. He was very friendly, active and had a lovely bass howl. Because of his basic instincts as an unneutered male, he buddied up with another neutered male and decided to become his "protector". He would not let anyone or anything else come near this dog without becoming aggressive. Unfortunately, his foster mom got too close to the other dog and Luke bit her several times. |

Tiny n/k/a Ace (10/99 to 9/03) Tiny/Ace was my baby! My husbands pal and buddy but my baby. We adopted Ace (aka Monkey, a nickname we later gave him) in October of 2001. My husband works for the sheriffs department and I was a dog lover why not mix work w/ pleasure was our thought. We did research and really looked into the bloodhounds before we adopted Acers. He was beautiful!! And a lover! He was great w/ my parents golden retriever who is very much an alpha female but Ace didnt let her get to him. You would never believe how much trouble those two would get into. He was a fabulous tracker he was born to track! He picked up right away what an incredible LOSS the county has had since we lost our Monkey. He did become aggressive we dont know why or what his history was. There wasnt any consistency to his aggression, at least none we could see. He nipped at a young boy we were tracking, my mother in law, my husband and some others. We had a daughter in December 2002 and Ace bit again we could not risk him hurting our daughter and we could not give him up. I could not stand the thought that someone may hurt him again, (Im sure he was abused at some point and that is what brought out the aggression) he was my baby and we just could not bear that thought. At least when we put him down he was be in the comfort of our arms on his way to the Lord and he could have a final resting place at home with us. We loved him and miss him VERY much!!!! We did plant a lilac as his headstone and it is doing very well keeps us smiling. The Yetzer Family |

Smokee (2002 to 8/03) I just wanted to thank
you for all of your help with Smokee. We tried everything with him, but he
was laid to rest on 8-21-03. We can't figure out exactly what went wrong,
but Smokee was very loving 95% of the time and the other 5% he was very dangerous.
Its almost as if a switch was turned on and off in his head. After trying
to attack my self and my Husband, we had to make this decision for him. I
cry as I write this to you because this is the hardest decision we ever had
to make. He was only a little over 1 year old, but we gave him the best life
I think anyone could have. He was loved so much and it hurts so bad. Thank
you. Dan & Amanda Heather Please note that Smokee was purchased by the Heathers from a supposedly reputable breeder. MBR tried to assist in evaluating his behavior and counselling the family. |

Lucy (1997-2003) Our beloved bloodhound, Lucy, passed away this morning. She had been nursing a torn leg muscle for the past few weeks. Yesterday morning she was doing just fine and by late that evening, we rushed her to the emergency vet where we discovered that she had a raging infection. Her temperature was 107.5 - a new record high for this vet on a live patient. But, that was our Lucy - she did things in her time and in her unique manner. She passed over the Rainbow Bridge around 5am. We adopted Lucy from Southeast
Bloodhound Rescue about 2-1/2 years ago. Thanks in large part to Lucy, she
helped us on the path to starting Midwest Bloodhound Rescue. Because of Lucy,
we have met wonderful people across the country and had the honor of helping
hundreds of bloodhounds. Her legacy lives on every day through Midwest Bloodhound
Rescue, Lucy's Haven Candles and, hopefully in the future, Lucy's Haven Boarding
Kennels. Her passing has left a huge void in our family but we feel forever
blessed for having known her. John and Sandi (Singer) Adams |

Chloe Monster (2002-2003) Note from MBR:
When Chloe came to us, we knew that she had space-aggression issues. 2 MBR
directors worked one-on-one with her for several months. At the time of her
placement, she seemed to be past her issues and showed tremendous potential.
At no point prior to placement did she bite a person. Her adoptive home was
carefully chosen and fully apprised of Chloe's background. Unfortunately,
Chloe's demons came back three-fold a while after placement. MBR stayed in
close contact with the home to offer suggestions and follow her progress.
In the end, Chloe left us all no choice but to make the safest decision we
could. It's
been a couple of weeks now since we had to put Chloe down and Corrina and I
are doing better. We both think about Chloe often and still talk about her at
least once a day. I guess we both just wish things had worked out. Just today
we started talking about the possibility of adopting another bloodhound. So here
goes,
We adopted Chloe from MBR in Aug. of 2003. Almost immediately we realized Chloe was overflowing with personality so we changed her name and she will forever be remembered as Chloe Monster. She was 8 months old and at first seemed like a normal well adjusted bloodhound. She was great on a leash, did well in her obedience classes, and was good with people and other dogs. Unfortunately we soon learned that Chloe also had a dangerous aggressive side. Most the time her aggression would stem from either her crate, her toys, or her food. Other times it happened for no apparent reason what-so-ever. We did our best to accommodate Chloe and avoid conflict when ever possible, we attended weekly private obedience classes and worked with her daily trying to adjust her attitude and make our relationship work. Finally, after about six weeks Chloe aggressively attacked my girlfriend's (Chloe's mom) hand and we decided that this incident, coupled with countless others, made it apparent that we'd done our best and that Chloe couldn't be fixed. It's simply not worth the risk of living with a dangerous dog. So we consulted MBR, our trainer, and our vet and the three of them agreed that Chloe needed to be euthanized. I wanted to tell our story because Chloe Monster was a great dog. Even though she caused us a lot of worry and heartache we had many good times and complied lots of memories. I don't blame her because it's not her fault...she was a victim of an irresponsible, heartless, greedy, breeder. Sandi, thanks again...you do great work and I appreciate it - Jeff |

Buford III (3/01 to 11/03) Buford came home with
us in October 2003, he was very thin but playful and had an appetite that
left us feeling it would not be long before he was back in great form. He
loved to play and run with his bloodhound little sister and it was so fun
to watch them together. After about a week, his appetite wained and it was
confirmed that he had a stubborn case of whipworm that needed additional treatment.
It was also obvious that Buford had been taught to be extremely submissive
toward male humans, he would cower at Mikes feet. We thought we were making
progress, when because of long ignored health issues and/or behavioral problems
he became aggressive toward me. Hoping that this was a health issue that we
could cure, our vet started a regimen of medication and diet, but it was too
late, we believe that long ignored health problems had taken their toll and
Buford turned on Mike and finally was aggressive to the point that we could
not be in the same room with him. After consulting with our vet and MBR it
was decided that Buford should be released from his pain, physical and psychological.
We feel we were lucky to have had a few weeks with him at his best, he was
only 2 years old and deserved much more but we hope that he is now able to
play and run in comfort and peace. We miss you Bu. |

Woo Doggy (7/98 to 1/04) About 3 weeks ago Woo was going downhill again, so we went back to the vet. His lymph nodes were inflamed, so the vet took a needle aspirate to send in for evaluation. The results suggested some cancerous changes and they wanted a larger biopsy. I took him back and they removed one of his lymph nodes for analysis. The results came back last week as lymphosarcoma. This is a malignant cancer with a very guarded prognosis. My vet was looking into what the best protocol for treatment might be, but it was progressing much too rapidly. Between the time of the first biopsy to the second, his lymph nodes had nearly tripled in size. This past weekend, the lymph nodes in Woo's chest had stopped working completely and he was building up fluid in the lungs. By Sunday, his breathing was very labored and he was uncomfortable. The vet said we could try lasix and steroids to take out the fluid, but that was a Band-Aid for the big I miss his droopy face
and constant tail wag. He quickly burrowed into my heart and now there is
an empty hole. I look forward to seeing him again on the other side. |

Gus (2/00 to 2/04) My wife and I adopted a 2 yr old bloodhound from Dr. Cline in April of 2002. Gus was our first bloodhound and my wife's first pet. Unfortunately, Saturday February 7 2004 , we had a fire in our house, and despite the best efforts of all the rescue personnel on the scene, Alas, he finally did get to catch one of those ambulances which he loved so much, as he was taken to the hospital in full glory, sirens a-blazin. Gus succumbed to smoke inhalation. That silly dog was almost 4, we rescued him when he was almost two, and we got 20 of the funniest months we could ever had imagined out of him. He gets the last laugh, because my wife shed more tears for that dog than she ever could have imagined. He will be sorely missed, and will always be a "good boy!" I have also attached a picture of Gus that I hope you can keep for one of you "success stories." While it was a short "story," it was well worth the undertaking. |

X (1/03 to 3/04) I am a foster mom, saying goodbye to a beautiful girl that was diagnosed with signs of severe aggression. It's amazing to me that an animal could hold such dangerous traits, yet at times, exhibit such an unbelievable sense of good nature. Daisy grabbed my heart the first day she came into my home. She was physically beautiful, had a wonderful smell, and blinked her eyes with such gratitude and softness when she was being stroked and kissed. She had a calm, playful side that was catered to whenever it was seen. I would turn back time if I could, if not in attempt to correct whatever afflicted this dog with her demons, but to get one last kiss from that beautiful girl. The pain I feel from her absence, I hope will soon be overtaken with fond memories of her quirky personality. Your foster mom loved you Daisy. |

George II (6/02 to 3/04) George was euthanized in March 2004. This case was extremely painful for MBR and its Executive Director. George II is a perfect example of what owners who do not heed the advice of professionals can do to harm a dog. George II was young and headstrong with a very well developed case of food aggression towards other dogs. When no food was present, he was very playful and enjoyed the company of other dogs. Unfortunately, some people do not realize that dogs cannot discern between people food and dog food. Sometimes something as benign as a dirty kleenex can be considered food in a dog's mind. When dogs and their reactions are not handled appropriately, other animals or people can get injured. To make matters worse, rescue groups are over-full and under-staffed. They have to make painful decisions on whether to do remedial training on an animal based partially on time availability and where to house the dog during the training. The end result is usually not positive. This is George's case. George could have been saved. |

Rusty II (7/02 to 5/04) Rusty was laid to rest in late May 2004. As the Executive Director of MBR, I am faced with the difficult task of taking the majority of MBR dogs needing euthanasia to the veterinarian. Sometimes it is even more difficult to write their In Memory story. Rusty II is one of those cases where it is hard but necessary to take him on that final trip and even harder to write the story. He was a great dog that snap/bit unpredicably three times. We don't know the "why" so we can't try to modify his behavior. We also owe a duty to the public not to place a knowingly unpredicable dog. So, this beautiful boy made the one-way trip and is now playing with all the other beloved bloodhounds over the rainbow bridge. |

Rusty will be missed by his foster family. His foster Dad stated in an email to fellow MBR Directors "What a tragedy. Poor Rusty. He was all good and no bad. The owners turned over ownership of the dog to the shelter, who then turned him over to MBR. We began a long process of putting weight on him and properly socializing him. Unfortunately, too much damage had already been done. He had learned to be aggressive and MBR was unable to get this under control. |

Moose (7/94 to 7/04) I am not sure how to start this letter. Today we had to put Moose down. He was doing so well, he fought a hard battle but I believe someone was making a choice for me. He was spry all day , and other than dragging his back leg a little more seemed like just another day. As I helped him get up to go to the bathroom this afternoon , Moose fell backwards on his hip and broke his leg. He broke it clean through the large bone . It was the leg the cancer was in. The cancer must have weakened his leg so much that the bone was thin and brittle. He only cried quietly a few times and then lay down and patiently waited. Never crying again. There was no saving him this time, he died on the 7th day of the 7th month of his 10th year. Moose was born on the 7th day of the 7th month. It is also a full moon today. Lima Bean (6/04 to 7/04) Supposedly this is an 8 week old dacshund puppy. She was seized from a puppymill bust where the owner received 121 criminal counts for his actions. The judge dismissed all of the counts except for 1. Just think, there are more little Lima Beans in Kentucky right now thanks to that judge. |

Roco (1/04 to 9/04) It's with much regret that I am sending this email. Roco, our distemper bloodhound puppy, turned into Chicago Animal Control, past away this morning at 4am. I really thought he had a good chance, especially after seeing some improvement in him yesterday. Roco was a fighter and with all that was being done to help him, he still managed to be a big lover, taking everything in stride. He will always be in my heart! |

Pocohontus (3/04 to 9/04) "Poco" passed away after a brief, but valiant, battle with distemper. Distemper is highly contagious and very dangerous for dogs under the age of 1 year. |

Droop Dawg (10/96 to 11/04) Droopy passed away in Nov. 2004 due to complications related to bloat. Droopy was brought in as a foster by the Misbauers in the Spring of 2003 as an 8 yr. old puppy mill rescue. Droopy took to indoor living real quick and before the Misbauer's knew it ... Droopy had made their home HIS ... and did he ever ...Droopy was every dog owners dream as far as the amount of soulfullness and love this boy had to give ... and everyone's worst nightmare (just kidding) when you add up how this escape artist, chewer, leg lifter, thief could make a real mess of things... but his sweet nature and his "droopy-ness" made him the BEST dog on the planet. Droop ... one thing is for sure ... you will never be forgotten (too many Droopy stories we'll talk about for years to come) and one thing is for sure ... we can't explain how much you are missed. |

Raisin (9/96 to 11/04) 11/04 As I write this,
there's a leash that now hangs in my hall.....unused. It belonged to my
now known as Raisin Rooo. When I step from the garage and don't get greeted
by Raisins usually AROOOO ROOO ROOO.............I miss my raisin. When
I sit at my computer and there ISN'T a head demanding to be on my lap.......I
miss my Raisin. When I wake in the morning and BOTH slippers ARE RIGHT
WHERE I left them......I miss my raisin.
Not a day will go by that we won't remember how much love and enjoyment she
offered to our family.
My male dog, Zeke, who used to look at me like "why is she here"
now looks at me like"where'd she go". He now sleeps with his head
hanging over her bed. I noticed how bad it smelled of "hound" and
thought, well I should wash this and put it away...........but I have to tell
ya, I cant get myself to do it just yet. I keep telling myself she is healed
now, no more pain no suffering. We will see her at the bridge someday and
reunite healthy, happy and forever. Raisin, we will miss you
dearly, you be a good girl, We'll see you soon!!! your loving family, |

Daisy II (11/96 to 12/04) Daisy was the most wonderful,
sweet, perfect addition to my life from the first day that I brought her home.
She had fallen ill about 1 month ago and was fighting a stomach bloating situation
combined with liver problems and possible cancer. As we tried to comfort Daisy
throught her pain, she seemed to suffer more and more. I made the painful
decision to put her to sleep on Thursday December 16, 2004. We miss her so
much and look forward to seeing her at the Rainbow Bridge one day in the future.
I know that she is flying with the angels and is happy and free of pain. We
love you Daisy !!! |
