Midwest Bloodhound Rescue, Inc.
Surrender Information
paw rule

PREVIOUS ADOPTERS: If you must return a dog adopted from MBR and the dog is under 6 years of age, you must give us a minimum of 3 months prior notification. If the dog is older than 6 years of age, you must give us 6 months prior notification. IF a dog must be rehomed, it is in the dog's best interest to go from your home to a new adoptive home. To accomplish this goal, we need the time specified above. Thank you for your assistance.

SHELTERS: MBR accepts bloodhounds from shelters and other rescue groups. Please email us information on your shelter, details about the bloodhound and a picture. MBR does not pay “adoption fees” or “pull fees”. However, if the dog requires medical services, MBR will reimburse the shelter for those costs. If your shelter is over 3 hours from the northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin area, transportation assistance will be required.

OWNERS:  Due to the high number of bloodhounds landing in animal control units and kill shelters around the midwest, MBR is no longer taking bloodhounds currently belonging to families who, for whatever reason, can no longer keep or want their bloodhound. HOWEVER, our organization will offer placement assistance providing the surrendering family is willing to keep/foster the dog until such time as a permanent placement home can be found for him/her, or will offer placement referral assistance if the surrendering owner wishes to prescreen applicants themselves. Note: this does not include dogs that MBR has previously placed. If you have adopted a dog from MBR and need to return it, please contact us immediately. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO CONTACT US.

PLACEMENT REFERRAL ASSISTANCE: Placement referral assistance means the dog’s information will be listed on MBR's website and Petfinder, with the contact information for the surrendering owners. No adoption applications will be taken on the dog, nor will any prospective adopters be screened. It will be the responsibility of the owners to check out the references and home of the potential adopters. The owners should charge an adoption fee of no less than $50, but no more than $250 for a dog. (The adoption fee is to discourage predators who pick up ‘free’ dogs and cats to sell to research laboratories.) No adoption donation will be charged by MBR. In order to offer placement referral assistance for bloodhounds needing to be rehomed, certain criteria MUST be met prior to listing the dog as available:

  1. The dog must be current on all vaccinations, heartworm negative, microchipped and altered (spayed or neutered). Proof of these items will be given to any adopter. MBR assumes no responsibility for providing these items for any animal. MBR will NOT assist you if the dog has not been altered.
  2. Any known temperament problems must be disclosed. Dogs with an aggressive history must be thoroughly evaluated by a professional to determine their suitability for adoption.
  3. Placement assistance will NOT be provided for any animal that has a history of aggression towards humans or a history of lethal aggression towards other companion animals, specifically other dogs.
  4. Provide general information concerning the dog’s training, behavior and temperament. Any additional information that might be of interest to an adopting family should be provided. Full disclosure of all pertinent information is mandatory.
  5. Provide the fee required by the surrendering owners.
  6. Provide the names, telephone numbers and/or email addresses of the surrendering owners to be published with the dog’s internet listing.
  7. Remit a minimum donation to MBR in the amount of $50 must be paid by cash, money order or Payal by the surrendering owner to cover the time involved in maintaining current available listings.
  8. The surrendering owners are REQUIRED to notify MBR as soon as the dog is placed.

PLACEMENT ASSISTANCE: Placement assistance means the dog will be placed using the same screening process used in placement of those bloodhounds in the MBR foster system. Only after a potential adopter has been pre-screened and approved, will they be given contact information for the surrendering owners. An adoption donation will be charged and payable to MBR to help ongoing rescue efforts. No compensation will be paid to the surrendering family. In order to offer placement assistance for bloodhounds needing to be surrendered, certain criteria MUST be met prior to beginning the search for a new home by MBR:

  1. Owner(s) must completely fill out a Release of Pet Ownership form to MBR. Original signature(s) are required.
  2. Provide proof of current vaccinations from a veterinarian.
  3. Provide a current Certificate of Rabies.
  4. Provide a current negative heartworm test for dogs over 1 year of age.
  5. Provide proof that the dog has been spayed or neutered. MBR will not assist you if your dog has not been altered.
  6. Any temperament problems known must be disclosed. Dogs with an aggressive history must be thoroughly evaluated to determine their suitability for adoption. Placement assistance will NOT be provided for any animal that has a history of aggression towards humans or a history of lethal aggression towards other companion animals, specifically other dogs.
  7. Any registration papers, pedigrees, microchip registrations, etc. will be surrendered with the animal. All registration papers must be signed over to Midwest Bloodhound Rescue, Inc. as well as microchip information.
  8. Provide 3-4 current, clear pictures of the dog showing its head and body.
  9. Provide a $200.00 non-refundable donation by cash, money order or transfer through Paypal.
  10. Upon receipt of ALL of the above, MBR will post the dog as available on MBR's website and on Petfinder. All potential adopters will be screened & approved by MBR.
  11. After approval, potential adopters will be given the owner's contact information so that they may meet the dog. Owners are not to accept any form of payment or donation personally or on behalf of MBR. All adoption agreements, transfer of paperwork and payment of adoption donation will be transferred privately between MBR and adopter PRIOR to the dog leaving owner's home. The decision of MBR on who shall or shall not adopt the dog is final.
